Maryland State Issue

Is it right for Maryland to ban #tobacco and flavored electronic cigarettes?

In 2020, Maryland passed several bills to reduce the toll of tobacco and electronic smoking devices. These bills were aimed at reducing cancer in Maryland.

The use of cigarettes and addictive products in Maryland high school students surged to a whopping 73% in 2016-2017, with nearly one in five students reporting that they had used cigarettes in the month the survey was conducted.

To help fight and overcome the epidemic, the Maryland General Assembly and Governor Larry Hogan passed a bill that kept the minimum age for tobacco purchase at age 21. However, they can still obtain these addictive products through online sellers. Underage users can pay an adult of legal age to buy for them.

Some evidence also suggests retailers may not fully follow the law. Therefore, additional policy measures are required to prevent youths from using these highly addictive and unsafe products.

Companies market a variety of flavors, limited seemingly only by the imagination. These are readily available to youth. Many young people say they started using these products because of their taste. While some users cite that taste is the main factor for their use, taste's role in helping smokers quit is still unclear.

Previous law succeeded in its primary goal to reduce vaping among youth, but it increased the use of flavored products. Should Maryland ban flavored cigarettes and #vaping products to curb youth #tobacco use?
