How many of us get a second chance to undo mistakes, erase criminal records, and live a respectable life? The number could soon be increased if Massachusetts passes a bill automatically sealing criminal records (CORIs) for people who qualify.
#ProjectOpportunity - this initiative was launched by Boston’s Mayor at the time, Marty Walsh. Its goal was to help residents to expunge or seal their criminal records. It has started an important dialog and actively helped people get access to housing and jobs.
Project Opportunity offers exceptional support to Boston residents by providing free legal consultation to evaluate whether someone's criminal records (CORI) qualify for expungement or sealing. It has inspired similar projects in other States. The administration is even trying to help residents by connecting them with social service and employment opportunities, especially in the tech space, hospitality and other growth-driven sectors. The initiative of the administration is really encouraging and is proving to be a blessing to many residents.
The project offers an opportunity for residents to breathe fresh air, get access to jobs and housing, and start a new life altogether. Rufus Faulk, Public Safety Director at Boston's Office, said of the project: "we're trying to be as inclusive and expansive as possible, trying to turn over every stone in terms of industry... trying to make sure that we are inclusive and expansive so that everyone recognizes that this is a free opportunity for them."
It is hard to imagine how difficult life becomes for people when they have a criminal past and are trying to reintegrate into society. There can be instances in people's childhoods where a small wrongdoing may result in a criminal record, and their entire life shouldn't have to be derailed because of this.
Faulk recognizes and acknowledges the fact that there are long historical issues with regards to racism in society, and says that Project Opportunity is also aimed at addressing issues of systemic racism by "making sure Black life is valued in policy, and I think we are on the right path." The administration is ready to review and undo some past missteps and working to be at the forefront around the policies.
Helping people seal their criminal records is a positive move that will assist them with the difficult business of rebuilding their lives, and it plays a part in confronting the issues of racism circling around our society. There couldn't be a better way than this to help our city heal.
