Amazon is dramatically expanding its footprint in Georgia. It announced adding new fulfillment centers early this year in Columbia County, with the promise of creating new jobs. However, the reality is that the jobs Amazon is providing are low paying and high risk due to the expected output on each employee.
The opening of more fulfillment centers by Amazon in the county does not increase overall private-sector #employment. This is because the new jobs created in the storage and warehousing sector are offset by job losses in other industries, or possibly because Amazon's employment growth is too small to detect the data significantly. Besides that, working in an Amazon facility may get a bit stressful with managers chewing out employees for not moving fast enough, partnered with meager pay, can be tough to put up with.
Local and state governments give away millions in credits, tax abatements, infrastructure assistance, and exemptions to attract Amazon warehouses; however, they don't get an adequate return on that investment. Instead, the government should invest in public services, such as education and infrastructure, that are proven to yield long-term economic development.
The overall employment effect of opening an Amazon fulfillment center in Georgia will be negative, and will not have a measurable statistical effect.. The bottom line is that the total private sector employment will not change significantly with the opening of this Amazon fulfillment center.
