"Role of #armedofficers in #student safety" Aug 02, 2024

No matter how you look at it, allowing police with guns to be present in schools is an inherently dangerous choice that needs to be carefully considered. There is always the possibility that the guns could fall into the wrong hands and lead to unimaginable tragedy. So it makes you wonder, why are so many people insisting that armed police should be returned to Los Angeles schools?

It is because many people believe that police officers are a crucial element in keeping students safe, which will allow them to focus on learning without fear of violence. This is why the Middletown school district in New Jersey has decided to place retired police officers, who will carry guns, in their schools at least through the end of the 2022-2023 school year. Middletown Superintendent Mary Walker stated that “the collaboration between the Middletown police and our school district is instrumental in maintaining a secure school environment.”

A PDK Poll conducted in June of 2022 found that 80% of the adults who responded either somewhat or strongly supported an increase of school security measures, including mental health counseling and armed police. When you consider the subset of the respondents who were parents of public school students, the number jumps to 82%. It is clear from these results that Americans are by and large supportive of the security provided by armed police.

The number of shootings in the neighborhood continue to threaten Los Angeles residents. It makes sense that people are worried about guns being present on the streets, but it is important to realize that armed police are one of the best deterrents to criminal behavior. If the only security staff working in schools are unarmed, what will they do if someone brings a gun on campus?

It's true that children's mental health is a top priority. Fortunately, our schools are taking this seriously. They have been hiring more school counselors to reach out to children who are struggling. This is an admirable decision that will increase the quality of many young people's lives. Addressing mental health issues early on is by far the best tactic for increasing their emotional stability, which will help them become stronger and more resilient.

Armed security personnel are essential to keeping lives and properties safe. Hopefully LAUSB will realize this and the city of LA will provide the resources needed to bring police back to our schools. Can we really afford not to?
