Local Atlanta Issue

Should Atlanta allow #foodtrucks to operate in more locations?

The City of Atlanta offers many opportunities for vendors to do business in the city, with varying rules and regulations depending on the vending, public or private, and where they operate. #FoodTrucks fall under the umbrella of public vending. They attract a lot of business from Atlanta residents and visitors to the area, and food trucks are frequently listed among Atlanta's top attractions.

The City of Atlanta sponsored a program known as the Right of Way Food Truck Vending Program that allows food trucks to operate in designated vending zones in the public right of way, meaning that they are parked along the street rather than on a sidewalk. The program's first phase allowed food trucks to operate in Downtown Atlanta's Government Walk area, which immediately surrounds City Hall, the Fulton County Government Center, and the State Capital.

Cleta Winslow, a member of the Atlanta Council until January of 2022, says that while she is not against food trucks, "we need to slow this train down" regarding the expansion of their operating areas.

Some view the expansion as a positive step that makes it possible for food truck vendors to operate with fewer restrictions. They are encouraged by the idea of small businesses being allowed to grow in a way that will put them in contact with more potential customers.

People opposed to expanding the food truck operating zones have expressed concern that mobile vendors with low overhead costs will negatively impact traditional restaurants. Traditional restaurants are still struggling significantly in the current economy and need to recover the revenue they lost during the Covid shutdowns.
