California is joining France, Norway, and the United Kingdom in banning the use of cars with traditional combustion engines. In September 2022, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a sweeping package of legislation to accelerate California's transition to clean energy. This legislation package will cause a reduction in greenhouse gas emission, which is a leading cause of climate change. The transportation sector in California is said to be accountable for more than half of carbon pollution, 80% of smog-forming pollution and 95% of toxic diesel emissions. California’s move to zero emissions is ambitious, but not surprising. Climate change is the thought of the residents who have increasingly been affected by wildfires that seem to worsen each day. There are plenty of obstacles that could hinder this program however, including challenges of sourcing raw materials, producing enough batteries and fuel-cells, and the need to deliver vehicles that consumers want to buy. Not to mention, the impact it will have on low-income people who cannot afford an electric car. The question for debate is, should California ban gas-powered vehicles by 2035 to curb climate change?
