The housing issue has been growing steadily for California residents, as well as the rest of the country. A 2016 report indicated that California would need an estimated 3.5 million newly built homes to solve their housing crisis. More recent research shows that COVID has made the housing market particularly variable. While it's expected for the housing market in California to stay fairly flat in the near future, it's hard to say what will happen over the next few decades.
California's scarcity of housing and affordable homes has left many individuals and families homeless. There are programs available for low-income locals currently active in California, but Californians who wish to be considered for these programs struggle to receive assistance.
Since 2010, most states have seen their homelessness population either lower or stay stable, however California's homelessness population has increased since 2010.
The question for debate is, should California use state taxes to provide more affordable housing options?
