California State Issue

Should California use state #taxes to provide more affordable housing options?

"Use taxes for recovery, innovative approach needed" Aug 13, 2024

State taxes in California are known for being among the highest in the country. As one of the most expensive states to live in, California is allocating unprecedented funding for more affordable housing options, with the financial gaps covered using state taxes.

One of the many factors driving California's high housing costs is the housing shortage. A supply and demand mismatch has forced people to compete for limited housing options, thereby increasing property prices and rents.

The higher housing costs make it difficult for middle-income households to afford other necessities like; food, transportation, clothing, and medical care. A substantial increase in private housing development, especially in the state's coastal urban communities, could be a pivotal remedy to this issue.

California's state taxes should be directed towards helping the homeless in more ways than just housing. Housing is only part of the problem. These funds should go towards setting up shelter facilities that provide health care and employment education.

Affordable housing is one of the biggest challenges that California has been facing over the years. However, it can be overcome by pursuing innovative state, federal, and local solutions.

Taking a more holistic approach to the housing crisis by folding in aspects such as transportation and medical care will benefit California better than focusing solely on housing.
