In September 2020, representatives from Pierce County in Washington state publicized its aim to eliminate the Electron Dam on the Puyallup River, situated approximately 42 miles (68 kilometers) southeast of Seattle, after the contamination of the river by the owner of the dam. The dam produces electricity for close to 20,000 people. Bruce Dammeier, a Pierce County Executive, stated that he aimed to do away with the dam immediately, quoting “inexcusable environmental harm” and “irresponsible management” by Electron Hydro. Dammeier added that the dam, now 116 years old, caused a lot of harm to a river that supports endangered salmon runs to an immeasurable degree. The head of regulatory affairs for Electron Hydro, Chris Spens, sought the ability to remove the risk to the fish by completing the dam project. He stated that the project offers residents much-needed resources and economic aid. Additionally, he pledged the organization’s commitment to clean waters and restoration. The stop-work command has continued to be in effect as three lawsuits have been filed against Electron Hydro due to the leak. The question for debate is, should the Electron Hydro dam be removed for environmental issues or repaired?
