In emergency situations caused by a major crisis such as a hurricane, the major focus of people is survival. The most essential and sought-after commodities are food items and a few other necessities that people need to live.
Many vendors will take advantage of people in times of need by raising their prices for basic goods such as bottled water or basic medicines. People will be forced to spend the money they have on hand on these overpriced products just to keep themselves and their families alive.
There is a need for Florida to take an even harsher stance against price gouging in times of desperation as a result of a prevalent crisis. The state needs to ensure people can have access to basic necessities until they are back on their feet.
Of course, vendors should be able to adjust their prices based on the market most of the time, but they should be limited in how high they can hike their prices during a state emergency.
If the government fights for the interest of everyone and not for one or a group of people alone, then it is very reasonable that the Florida state government makes a harsher stance against price gouging in times of crisis. It would be in the best interest of the government, and the people it is supposed to protect.
