"Outdated sentences should align with current #laws" Jul 15, 2024

How unfair is it if an #inmate is serving a long jail term in accordance with old redundant laws after shorter sentences have been passed? It is very important that the outdated sentences of inmates be aligned with current applicable laws and the jail terms reduced accordingly.

In a 2020 interview, Jomari DeLeon said in an email “I’m completely heartbroken, hurt and feel so defeated. People who have my same charges have left years before I even get to go home, and they continue to arrive and leave before I do.” She was serving a 15 year sentence for selling 48 hydrocodone pills to an undercover cop. If the same crime were committed today, the sentence would be three years.

When the low level offenders are kept in the same prison with heinous criminals, they are bound to suffer. Enough has been said about treatment of inmates, and that conduct cannot be ignored. The sooner we accept the situation, the better; this is the chance to enact change for low level offenders.

It makes sense that the outdated sentences need to align with current laws, and affected inmates should see the benefit immediately. Inmates should not be ignored due to apprehension or lack of information, the call now is for an inclusive society representative and fair to all.
