LA Metro has settled upon a design for the gondola cars they would like to build for Dodger Stadium, and fans are allowed to visit the prototype located in the G Lot. LA Metro has spent the past few years outlining its proposal to build a gondola to connect Dodger Stadium to LA's public transit system via Union Station. Union Station is one of the region's most heavily used transit systems, hosting roughly 100,000 daily transit riders. This number is expected to double by 2040, according to former LA Metro CEO Phillip A. Washington. When it is constructed, the gondola system will be able to move more than 10,000 fans to the stadium from Union Station in the two hours preceding a game. The 1.5-mile trip from downtown will take only seven minutes. Each car will have a capacity of 30 passengers. The gondolas will not cost riders extra money, because anyone with a ticket to that day's game will be able to get a free ride on the new transportation system. . Construction is slated to begin in 2026 after the final permits have been acquired. Opponents of the project are skeptical of the system's ability to serve as a reliable source of transportation. They worry that it will bring more traffic to residential areas around the loading stations, and residents are concerned about the changes it may cause to the local economy and demographic makeup. They also worry that it may lower property values in the area with noise pollution, and some think it may be an eyesore. Those in support of the gondola system say that it will make trips to the stadium easier and more accessible to fans, reducing traffic congestion and associated greenhouse gas emissions. They believe experts' assurances that the system will be safe, quiet, and environmentally friendly, as it is based on zero-emission technology. They also state that it has the potential to improve transit access for open spaces and city parks, making Los Angeles a more desirable destination for out-of-towners as well as permanent residents. The question up for debate: Should LA Metro be allowed to use taxpayer dollars to build a gondola connecting Dodger Stadium to Union Station?
