The Mississippi Confederate Flag that had flown over the state for 126 years has finally retired. Mississippi Governor, Tate Reeves, signed a law to remove the flag. It was raised over the Capitol grounds for the last time in Jackson, Mississippi, on July 1, 2020, removed and folded later that day by a Highway Safety Patrol Officer. Mississippi’s nine-member commission picked the new “Magnolia Flag” as the new design on October 3, 2020. The new flag was put on the ballot in November 2020 and was accepted amid concerns about the phrase “In God We Trust” displayed on it. However, many state residents pushed back, stating they wanted a vote on the old flag too. Attorney General Lynn Fitch, a prominent Republican lawmaker, stated, "It is my personal belief that it is time for us to change our state flag to reflect the love, compassion, and conviction of our people.” The question for debate for all Mississippians is: Should Mississippi have retired its old #Confederate State Flag?
