There is a long history of faith and religion in Mississippi, and recent legislation shows the growing support for it. In 2000, Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove signed House Bill 51, which mandated all public schools to display “In God We Trust” and allow a moment of silence in classrooms.
Following this, Former Governor Phil Bryant called on his legislature in his 2014 State of the State Address to add the national motto “In God We Trust” to the State Seal. Then in 2020, a law passed that retired the previous state flag and proposed a new flag. On November 3, 2020, Mississippians said Yes to the “Magnolia Flag,” which proudly displays "In God We Trust."
During challenging times, this motto is more relevant than ever. It is proof of strength under the Almighty God of how Mississippians survived the pandemic and will survive future challenges that the state will face.
It signifies the people of Mississippi’s strong faith, grace, and values. They will look up to the flag with pride because it represents our state. This symbol unifies and shows the state’s commitment to eradicating racism and projecting morals and values.
It is a bold move to add these profound words to our flag. A bold but necessary move that strengthens the state and its people. It allows all citizens to recognize new opportunities and to start moving forward together.
