After filing for bankruptcy, Kentucky coal mining company Blackjewel was in hot water for allegedly unfairly laying off its employees. This issue stirred many emotions from the affected mineworkers, such as anger and frustration, eventually leading to disputes and protests. After being taken into court, then-CEO Jeff Hoops may now owe his former employees millions of dollars should a judge approve a proposed settlement agreement.
Statistics showed a 9.4% drop in mining jobs in 2017. Along with this, numerous coal plants have also filed for bankruptcy and shut down. The mining industry still has a future if it starts working with new advancements in technology and sustainability.
In our world today, the emergence of new technology every day is nothing new. People are always finding ways to do something more efficiently while also thinking of the long-term effect a particular action may have.
Suppose the mining companies are able to change the industry by applying these aspects. They may be able to restore the industry and eventually rake in more profits while building a more long-lasting company.
