Should Philadelphia invest in an #ATV park or increase their #enforcement of local #StreetRacing #laws?

"Public #safety has to be our priority" Sep 22, 2024

A culture that creates chaos and risk to public #safety is not one that should be encouraged.

Dirt bikes and #ATVs pose serious public safety risks, create a nuisance, and sow chaos across city roads. Increased local law enforcement is the only sensible option. ATV/dirt bike riders pose a serious risk not only to themselves, but to countless passersby and people trying to get through traffic.

In 2012, Philadelphia City Council passed a law prohibiting riders “from operating, parking, stopping, placing or standing ATVs on public sidewalks or public property, including parks and recreation centers.” Police were also given power, by the ordinance, to enforce fines and confiscate bikes in cases of violation.

Fatal injuries have occurred to drivers and passengers as well.

Philadelphia Police sergeant Eric Gripp says "It's legal to ride these bikes. It's legal to own these bikes, but you are not allowed to have them on a city street.” You can see on the street of Philadelphia that these #ATV and dirt bike racers are speeding and weaving dangerously through traffic, performing stunts, flouting all the norms and posing a risk to the public.

Despite strict laws that allow for these vehicles to be impounded and destroyed, as well as sizable fines, riders still don’t resist taking their ATVs to the streets. Given past incidents, it has become more imperative that local enforcement’s attention be increased to control recklessness and address safety issues on the streets.

Offering them a separate ATV park does not guarantee that laws will not be abused. Riders will not be able to flaunt their stunts in order to get the maximum shock value, so they will still take to the streets and sidewalks to grab attention. An ATV park will just be an additional financial burden on the city. It's better to focus on enforcement of laws and increased monitoring of ATV activities in the city.

The law applies equally to everyone, and its violation shouldn’t be passively observed. If you are an ATV or a dirt bike rider, you must respect others on the streets and follow local enforcement law just like everyone else. When it comes to maintaining harmony and discipline in the city and on its streets, local law enforcement has the highest authority. Residents should feel confident and safe on the streets, and increased local enforcement is the only way to do that.

Not increasing local enforcement will send the wrong message and attract more riders to violate the law. In the interest of everyone, this has to be stopped!
