Christopher #Columbus was an important figure in the history of America. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that without his efforts, the present state of modern America would be far from what it is now. We can argue about the justification of past decisions, but we can’t change history. The statue of Christopher Columbus is much more than a #statue of a single man. It is a reminder of American history and how it was shaped subsequently because of the decisions made.
American history revisionists have criticized the role Columbus played in the enslavement and murder of the indigenous inhabitants. Many of our Founding Fathers could also be put under this criticism, but the authenticity of their allegations is simply more ambiguous. Moreover, we must remember that actions taken in the past must be considered within the context of their time. It’s unfair for us to judge actions from 500 years ago by the same standards and hindsight we possess today. Moral and ethical values are constantly evolving. What’s important is that we remember our history, the bad as well as good.
Removal of the statue isn’t going to change the past. Instead, it should remain as a reminder for the future. It will serve as a lesson without disregarding the parts of history we detest.
The statue of Columbus represents more than just a man and his deeds; it was placed in commemoration of the lynching of 11 Italians. It holds immense sentimental value for the Italian-American community. They have played an equally important part in building the city of Pittsburg as their fellow Americans. The removal of the statue will wipe the memory of lynched Italians.
Today, as America fights for equality and inclusion that represents all its communities, such a decision could make the Italian-American community feel marginalized. This is the last thing we need right now. The statue should stay in the park as a symbol and reminder of our history, as well as, a symbol for the contributions of the Italian-American community.
