Should the #ConfederateFlag be removed from the Williamson County seal?

"Keep the flag, we need to preserve our history" Jun 29, 2024

The #Confederate flag represents a significant part of the history of Williamson County, and hence it shouldn’t be removed from the County seal. The Confederate flag and cannon on the seal represent a significant period in the county’s history, and we can't just erase it. Are we supposed to just forget that this history exists?

There’s no justification for neglecting the significance of that period. Some of the county’s historic sites still fly the Confederate flag... which they should, as it is a historic symbol. The cannon and flag serve as reminders of past struggles and sacrifices of the county’s people. It is how we became who we are.

This is the reason the Tennessee Historical Commission's Heritage Protection Act exists: to protect our heritage. All of our shared experiences, good and bad, have culminated in the forming of our identity. If we forget who we are, how can we possibly stand up for anything that we believe in?

Whether some prefer to oversimplify things and incorrectly say that slavery was the only issue behind the American Civil War, the truth is that the Civil War is part of our past and heritage. We cannot ignore how fundamentally it has shaped our county.

Considering all opinions, the county seal should stay just like it is now. Tennessee has a proud history and the people who sacrificed their lives for the country should be given proper honors.

We have no way of knowing whether we will be on the "right side" or "wrong side" of history, and neither did the people whose lives were derailed by the Civil War. The Confederate flag should stay on the county seal as a #reminder of the significance of that era of history of the county.
