Michigan State Issue

Should the federal government have assisted in fighting #crime in Michigan's major cities?

In 2020, Former President Trump sent federal law enforcement into those American communities plagued by violent crime to restore public safety and bring violent perpetrators to justice. According to former President Trump, they had no choice but to get involved.

The government sent 42 federal law enforcement officers to Detroit to help the local police fight the dramatic spike in violence in the city. Statistics show that Detroit's violent crime rate skyrocketed, with homicides increasing by 31% and shootings by 53%. Nearly 380 people were shot in two months, of which 63 cases resulted in casualties. In 2018, Detroit was ranked as one of the most violent cities in the United States

Detroit citizens are concerned about the federal intervention, and they fear backlash as this intervention is fated to come amidst a national #BlackLivesMatterMovement. They also believe this issue is a significant cause of violence in certain cities. Many locals are afraid that their city might turn into another Portland incident, where the arrival of federal agents in the Oregon city led to complete chaos and mayhem.

Additionally, there are certain limitations to deploying federal law enforcement officers in a state. In the U.S., policing violent crime and property crime within a state's jurisdiction is primarily the state's responsibility. Only a few categories of crime can trigger federal jurisdiction, like offenses perpetrated against federal and foreign officials or offenses carried out on some territory, which though located within the state, does not come under the state authority, like the U.S. military installations.

Considering this situation, should the federal government have assisted in fighting crime in Michigan's major cities?
