Should the U.S. be a member the #UnitedNations Council on #HumanRights #UNHRC?

In 2006, because of its deteriorating status, The United Nations replaced the commission on human rights with the new United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to restore its declining credibility. For the new UNHRC, a group of elected countries from different global regions serve for three-year terms on the council. The UNHRC meets three times a year, and reviews the human rights records of all UN members in a special process the council says gives countries the chance to say what they have done to improve human rights, known as the Universal Periodic Review.

In 2018, under the Trump administration the U.S. left the UNHRC. At the time US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, called the council a "hypocritical and self-serving organization". In 2021, under the Biden administration the U.S. officially rejoined the UNHRC.

Those who believe the U.S. should not be involved in the UNHRC believe that current council is heading on the same path as the former human right commission. They feel that image is being tarnished due to a prejudice against Israel, allowing memberships on the council to countries with extreme human rights offenses, and the inefficiency to confront the human rights violations of powerful and influential countries.

On the other hand, supporters of the U.S. holding a position on the UNHRC believe that we are deliberately ignoring the better side. They believe that the human rights council is a very powerful organization that promotes and protects human rights across all countries in the United Nations. With its influence, the council has made some significant improvements in areas such as Myanmar, Congo, Syria, and Yemen. The council is even dealing with issues like promoting the rights of those with disabilities, improving women's lives in various countries, and assisting with children living in poverty.

So, the question for debate, should the United States be a member of the United Nations Council on Human Rights?
