The United Nations Human Rights Council was established in 2006 to replace the Commission on #HumanRights. 

The Trump administration justified its 2018 withdrawal by stating the UNHRC was a hypocritical organization that mocks human rights and is biased against specific countries that Trump believes don't deserve it...namely Israel. 

Trump's withdrawal from UNHRC sent a message that the U.S. had refrained from its obligation to universal human rights and strengthened commitment among member states to endorse universal human rights. The U.S. withdrawal caused more harm, because if the U.S. is committed to human rights responsibility they can raise their voice of reform by being inside the UNHRC. The absence of the U.S. meant authoritarian regimes get more space on the world stage, and enabled them to rewrite the very definition and rules of global human rights.

By rejoining in 2021, the U.S. and its allies can now push for a detailed, gradual reform of the system from within the UNHRC. This includes taking a thoughtful approach to resolving the Israel/Palestine conflict.

The UNHRC is an influential body where countries can represent their values in order promote and take action in protecting human rights. The U.S. should be a leader in that fight.
