"It’s time for U.S. #colleges to be free" Jul 27, 2024

Quenching education thirst in the U.S. was made easy by facilitating needy students with student loans. However, most graduates face a big challenge of repaying their acquired loans after graduation. The growth and increase of student loan debts has millions of students struggling with debts for decades following their graduation. The requirement of a college education for even lower-paying jobs makes it more difficult for post-graduates to pay loans.

During the 2020 presidential campaign, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont proposed sweeping plans to do away with billions in #studentloan debt while reducing college prices to “affordable” levels.

Some state schools, including University of Michigan and University of Virginia, have introduced assistance programs designed to ease the burden for low and middle-income students attending their institutions.

Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico Gov., proposed a free tuition plan for any state resident who attends a public institution. However, opponents of this plan said that a bachelor’s degree usually results in higher lifetime salaries for students, thus about $30,000 in debt is payable for the bigger earning power a degree brings.

Disbursing the loans to students helps them cover their living expenses and other costs associated with attending college. Other students use federal loans to pay for private colleges, thus they are unlikely to be affected by the free college plans.

In addition to relief from student debt, free #college for students helps jumpstart the economy. Graduates who have student loans always strive hard to pay those back. Without loans, students have a greater amount of excess income used for buying houses, cars, and consumer items, thus contributing more to the economy.

Free college also levels the playing field between the haves and the have nots.

Hard-working students who have strived to earn a degree in higher education should enjoy a sense of freedom from debt post-graduation. Free tuition is a fight for freedom for post-graduates in the U.S.
