I want a free Ferrari. Also, some new waterskis. I can use some tap dance classes. Those are my choices, you are OK paying for it...right? 

Nothing is free if it involves needed funding. Why should taxpayers fund optional college education (post K-12) for someone they don't know?

Some high school graduates may have a dream of going on to attend a #college and earn a degree for their own needs. Institutions need funds in order to provide high-quality education, services, and resources to students. If colleges were to be free, the quality of education would drastically decrease as they would be overburdened. This increase in the university population would put an immense drain on resources without an increase in the necessary funding.  

Another problem with free #tuition is that it would diminish the value of a college education. Students would take the experience and the opportunities it provides for granted. Some will not work hard in their studies to make the most of their education. They might drop out of school before graduation knowing that they can always come back. While some students would be elated for the opportunity to get an education they otherwise could not afford, there is also a strong connection between someone’s appreciation and how much they are having to pay for it. 

College degrees would be of less value if everyone had them. If a bachelor’s degree becomes free, then it becomes the new standard. Everyone will have an additional four years beyond high school and businesses will begin to look for students with even more education. This could lead to more unemployed workers who are unable to make use of their education. 

It sounds nice, but those that support #freetuition fail to consider all of the areas in which higher education would suffer if college were to become paid for by the government. We must protect the value and quality of a college degree by paying what it is worth to the individual to obtain the degree.
