The debate on #termlimits for members of the US House of Representatives and Senate is an ongoing debate. Currently, there are no limits in place. Senate members are elected for a term of six years, and can thereafter enjoy an unlimited number of terms. Members of the House of Representatives are elected for two years, and can subsequently continue to be reelected as many times as they can win. Proponents of term limits say that restrictions will stop politicians from getting too all-powerful, and alienating their voter base. Also, it is believed that they are spending disproportionate amounts of time raising money for re-election campaigns, rather than working for the people. With term limits in place, people serving in Congress would need to be accountable to their constituents and stay focused on getting the job done. Those opposing term limits argue that imposing limits could prove undemocratic, and actually take power away from the people. Congressmen and women whose work is appreciated will be automatically barred from re-election even, if their constituents want them to stay on. The question for debate, should there be term limits for members of Congress?
