The founding fathers of the electoral college were not aware of all the necessary information for making informed decisions that modern technology and political parties have given to the voters. Electors were being referred to as "free from any sinister bias" back in 1788; the case is not the same now.
Like all other voting laws that have been modified or discarded throughout history in order to limit the direct democracy in the #Constitution, the same should be the case with the Electoral College. Women and past slaves were given the right to vote, and senators who were appointed by the state legislatures are now directly elected by the popular vote as the result of the constitutional amendments. The vice presidency was once bestowed to the electoral votes runner up, but now the procedure has been changed to reflect the authenticity of elections.
A president of a country like the United States of America should be chosen by the popular vote. There are over 300 million people in the United States, so how do only 537 people decide the president of a country with Bush/Gore in 2000? Hillary Clinton won the popular votes by more than one million vote margin in 2016 elections, yet still lost the election on electoral votes. Event former President Trump, who benefitted from the Electoral system in 2016 (before losing in 2020), stated that he believes that presidents should be chosen by the popular vote. Specifically, he stated, "I would rather see it, where you went with simple votes. You know, you get 100 million votes, and somebody else gets 90 million votes, and you win. There’s a reason for doing this. Because it brings all the states into play."
Electoral colleges ignore the will of the voters, and that should not be accepted in any case. So, in order to ensure that every national citizen is involved in selecting the president of the country, the electoral college should be abolished and popular vote put into place.
