Many verified negative news from victims or credible sources about the bad things happening at private detention centers in the US has made banning #immigrant detention centers a significant step in the right direction.
Most of the detention centers where detained immigrants are held, are operated by private companies with a contract with #ICE. However, this private detention model, common in the United States, has raised several concerns, as seen in the case of immigrant detention centers.
There are many deaths and ill-treatment of detained immigrants. This poor treatment of immigrants is only made possible because private detention centers are being used.
Most times, these private detention facilities are overcrowded, and there isn't a separation of the sick from the healthy, even during the pandemic's peak. These close quarters cause diseases like lice, scabies, flu, and chickenpox outbreak.
Sometimes, immigrants being held in these private detention facilities are kept longer than required by law; sometimes, they stay for months without adequate care and medication.
Some detainees also complained about physical and verbal abuse by the guards, which worsened the detained immigrants' mental state. Also, there are reports that border patrol agents made fun of migrant deaths in a Facebook group.
Kids are not exempt from this mistreatment as they also suffer from inhumane activities like sleeping on a cold concrete floor, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, denial of medication, and, worst cases, death.
The US government has made steps in the right direction to prevent other cases like these and also to ban private detention centers. Alternative migrant detention centers are being set up like tent cities, moving unaccompanied kids into an army base, and converting a Walmart and worker camp into holding centers for unaccompanied kids.
Even though they haven't been implemented on a large scale, these moves are welcomed, and banning private detention centers is a step in the right direction.
