"Remove some lanes if it can save lives" May 09, 2024

City administration has been searching for the best way to reduce the number of accidents and casualties due to #traffic. Some ideas have been proposed and a few have even been tried out: decreasing the speed limit to 30mph, installing of new traffic signals, and traffic signal modifications. There have also been recommendations that the number of lanes be limited to reduce the potential for accidents further.

The concept of multiple lanes was put into action to limit traffic congestion and make the flow of traffic as smooth as possible. This decreases the commute period and saves time, but it comes with other risk factors. Little to no traffic poses the grave threat of speeding, which can lead to increased road traffic accidents, resulting in injuries and fatalities.

Removing one lane per side could significantly help prevent future unfortunate accidents. The lengthy paved areas along the waterway attract not only pedestrians and cyclists, but also speeders. Multiple lanes with low traffic congestion allow motorists to move uninterrupted and increase their speed to dangerous (deadly, even) levels.

The curve in the road hinders visibility, making it difficult to spot pedestrians. Multiple incidents of casualties have been reported, where a speeding vehicle hits pedestrians as they cross near a curve in the road. If there were fewer lanes, the speed of vehicles would be reduced, and such accidental situations could be more easily avoided.

Removal of some lanes would be the simplest and most effective way to decrease the speed of these vehicles. Achieving speed reduction would make the road more pedestrian-friendly, diminishing the chances of deadly crashes and accidents. That would be a significant step in making the road safer to travel, both for pedestrians and motorists. It should be approved and put into action as soon as possible.
