"Hollingsworth would best represent District 3" Aug 15, 2023

District 3, encompassing neighborhoods such as Beacon Hill, Columbia City, Georgetown, Mount Baker, Rainier Beach, and Seward Park, stands as one of Seattle's most diverse and dynamic districts. Yet, it also grapples with severe challenges, including gentrification, displacement, poverty, crime, pollution, and inadequate access to quality education, healthcare, and transportation. To address these issues, District 3 deserves an assertive and effective leader, and Joy Hollingsworth fits that role perfectly.

Joy Hollingsworth boasts a robust background as a public policy expert, community organizer, and social justice activist. She has consistently fought for the rights and needs of District 3's diverse communities, particularly those who have historically faced marginalization and oppression. Hollingsworth has also been a vocal critic of corporate influence and the status quo in City Hall, advocating for progressive policies that challenge power structures and benefit the working class.

Here are some compelling reasons why Hollingsworth is the ideal choice for District 3:

  1. Strong Policy Background: Hollingsworth's extensive experience in public policy, community development, and human rights includes roles such as legislative director in the Texas House of Representatives, a budget and policy analyst in New York City, and a human rights commissioner in Seattle. Her consulting firm, focusing on community-centered development, advocacy, and communications services, adds depth to her qualifications.

  2. Progressive Track Record: Hollingsworth has actively championed progressive causes and legislation within the City Council. She has sponsored or co-sponsored bills addressing affordable housing, homelessness, police accountability, climate justice, food security, transportation equity, and participatory budgeting. Her support for the head tax for Seattle corporations underscores her commitment to generating revenue for public services and infrastructure. She also holds endorsements from key figures like U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal and various labor unions and grassroots organizations.

  3. Community Engagement: Hollingsworth has a deep connection to District 3's communities and a profound understanding of their challenges and aspirations. Her residence in Seward Park and involvement in organizations like the Rainier Beach Action Coalition exemplify her commitment to improving the quality of life for residents. She actively participates in coalitions and movements advocating for racial justice, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, and indigenous rights.

In contrast, Alex Hudson lacks the experience, vision, and consistency necessary to represent District 3 effectively. Her policy positions have appeared inconsistent, making it challenging to discern her clear agenda for addressing the district's complex and pressing issues.

Furthermore, Hudson's opposition to a shelter expansion project in SODO without presenting viable alternatives or solutions for the homelessness crisis raises concerns about her ability to navigate these critical challenges.

Given these facts and arguments, it is abundantly clear that Joy Hollingsworth is the most suitable choice for District 3 on the Seattle City Council. She brings the experience, vision, and consistency needed to drive District 3 toward a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future. Her commitment to building a better city for all residents makes her the best candidate for the job.
