Score for this "Hanning" opinion : 7.8

"What Makes #Hanning Right for Seattle City Council" Sep 07, 2023

The office of a city council member may not always seem as high-profile as other political positions, but it plays a crucial role in shaping the lives of constituents. That's why the people of Seattle's District 6 must carefully consider their choice for this office in the upcoming election, where the decision is between incumbent councilmember Dan Strauss and Pete Hanning.

Typically, it might make sense to lean towards the incumbent, given their experience and understanding of how things work. However, in this case, there are compelling reasons to consider otherwise.

One of the most important attributes for a city council member is honesty. Trust in your district representative's word is paramount. Unfortunately, Strauss has demonstrated that he may not always be truthful and can change his stance based on popular opinion.

A significant example of this is his shifting position on police funding. While announcing his bid for reelection, he expressed strong support for fully funding the Seattle Police Department and optimizing staffing. However, his track record tells a different story. In 2020, he advocated for a 50% cut in the police department's budget, leading to the departure of over two thousand officers and staff. In 2021, he opposed Mayor Bruce Harrell's efforts to fill 80 vacant SPD positions, contributing to ongoing understaffing issues.

These flip-flops on important issues suggest a lack of consistency and raise questions about whether he can be trusted to make decisions in the best interest of the district.

Pete Hanning, on the other hand, offers a different approach. As the incumbent executive director of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, he brings economic stability and an understanding of the district's layout and connections. His experience on the North Precinct Advisory Council positions him well to improve the relationship between the community and the police.

Moreover, Hanning's promise to focus on practical issues like financial management, public safety, and homelessness, rather than grandstanding and ideological battles, is refreshing and aligns with the district's needs.

The choice for the council member of District 6 should be made with the best interests of the community in mind. Pete Hanning's commitment, experience, and practical approach make him a strong candidate who can provide the calm, confident, and honest leadership that the district needs. If you truly care about the best interests of the City Council, Pete Hanning appears to be the right choice for District 6.
