Bringing Back the American Dream in Florida

" Oct 07, 2022

With nine different candidates throwing their hats in the ring for a chance to serve as Florida’s representative in the U.S. Senate, November 8, 2022, promises to be a truly memorable day in the history of the state. Interestingly, Floridians don’t have to think too much when it comes to deciding who they should vote for as U.S. Senator this mid-term election year. Indeed, the only real choice is Val Demings of the Democratic Party.

Let’s put aside the glaring embarrassment that Incumbent Senator Marco Rubio has become to the good people of Florida for a moment. Instead, let’s look at what exactly qualifies Demings for U.S. Senator, a position that can potentially make or break the state, if not the entire country at large.

More formally known as Valdez Venita Demings, this 65-year-old has a commendable portfolio to her name. Unlike many others, Demings started her bid to serve the people as a social worker in Jacksonville right out of college. She worked there for 18 months before putting in an application to join the Orlando Police Department in 1983. In 2007, she was made chief of the department, becoming the first woman to ever lead the department in the process. She left the position in 2011, having successfully secured a record 40% reduction in violent crimes during her tenure and bringing the community closer to servants of the law. This tells us one thing about this outstanding character: she can deliver results.

Demings retired from the police force after 27 years of active duty but still felt the calling to serve the people in another capacity. So, in 2015, she decided to contest for the United States House of Representatives spot in the newly restructured 10th congressional district. There, she continued to valiantly champion a people-first agenda. Most notably, she fought tooth and nail to deliver the relief funding that small businesses in Florida needed to push through at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, she called out big pharmaceutical companies with a congressional report she released on insulin prices in 2019. She was also one of those to vote for both articles supporting the impeachment of former President Donald Trump in 2019. She also supported the second impeachment of ex-President Donald Trump in 2021. This is a clear signal that Demings isn’t afraid to stand up to any authority in the defense of what’s right. It clearly highlights where her priorities lay as far as leadership is concerned.

Now, she’s calling on voters in Florida to put her on a pedestal that would allow her to accomplish even more for the state and the country.

In her words, “I believe that only in America can a little black girl, the daughter of a maid and a janitor, growing up in the south in the ’60s, have such an amazing opportunity. No one can make me give up on America.” She knows what it is to grow up from nothing and she wants to stake it all to make sure that the coming generation gets the same opportunities to get to the top that she did. She sees the plight of the people clearly which is why she’s committed to seeing more jobs created and boosting the economic infrastructure in Florida.

While representing the state in the Senate, another of her major goals is to follow the most efficient course to creating affordable health care for working American families. She believes that the exploitation of Americans in this sector mustn’t continue and she’ll do everything within her power to lower the cost of prescription drugs and challenge those bent on using the health conditions of citizens to increase their profit margins.

Demings also sees that the cost of accommodation in the state is extremely prohibitive. Once in office, she’s promising to get more funding from the federal budget to initiate more affordable housing in the region.

As a police officer, she made lives safer and brought together the community. As a member of the House of Representatives, she put Floridians first and did everything in her power to improve the standard of living of her constituents.

There is no doubt that as senator, she’ll deliver for the people again. Demings is a woman of action and her track record amply proves this.

So vote for Demings and let’s change Florida into what it’s meant to be!
