The general elections to be held on November 8, 2022, will see seven different candidates run for one of Missouri’s U.S. Senate seats. This intense election will not only have an immediate impact on MO but may reshape the face of the Senate at the national level, too. The Incumbent Senator, Roy Blunt, who has been in office for two terms, stated that he wouldn’t be contesting for a third term. Blunt is the 5th Republican senator to forgo a reelection bid. Following his decision, the two major contenders for this position are Democrat Trudy Valentine and Republican Eric Schmitt.
More formally known as Trudy Busch Valentine, the Democratic Party’s candidate for this office is the heiress of the Anheuser-Busch beer company and a veteran nurse. In her words, Busch Valentine is, “…running to put politics aside and to put people first.” She already has a laid-out blueprint for what she intends to do, should she be voted in on election day. Some of her major priorities include increasing affordability and making life easier for the middle and lower-income earners, making health care more readily available in the state, and protecting safe and legal abortion.
The Republican candidate hoping to succeed outgoing Senator Blunt is Eric Schmitt. The 43rd and Incumbent Attorney General of the state of Missouri, Schmitt is campaigning on his track record in office so far. Most notably, he filed a lawsuit against the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. He has also filed several lawsuits against the federal government as well. If allowed to serve as senator, he intends to prioritize election integrity, making big tech more accountable, fighting cancel culture, improving the unemployment situation, and protecting America first.
With election day drawing ever closer, Missourians are asking, who would make a better representative to the Senate from Missouri, Democrat Trudy Valentine or Republican Eric Schmitt?
