The choice of voters in Pennsylvania come November 8, 2022, will be one of the most followed activities in the 2022 midterm election year. This is because Republicans will be trying to keep hold of power in a state that President Joe Biden won in 2020. Wisconsin is the only other state in the country that shares a similar status. However, the general elections promise to be even more spectacular in PA because the Incumbent U.S Republican Senator Pat Toomey is retiring. Of the eight (8) candidates looking to replace him in office, the two (2) major contenders are Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz.
John Fetterman is the current Lieutenant Governor of the state of Pennsylvania. Before this time, he spent over a decade serving as the mayor of Braddock. Fetterman faced significant competition leading up to his party’s primaries, most notably from Conor Lamb. However, he won the Democratic Party’s nomination for PA’s U.S. Senate seat fairly comfortably on May 17, 2022. According to Fetterman’s official website, he plans to address 16 issues once elected to office. Some of these range from legalizing cannabis to investing in rural communities, fighting for women’s reproductive freedom, and improving health care.
His appearance on the ballot in the coming general election will mark Mehmet Oz’s first foray into the political scene. Oz is a retired surgeon, author, and professor emeritus. He’s most popular for his work on the titular The Dr. Oz Show and stands as the first Muslim to be nominated by a major party for a U.S. Senate seat. As a senator representing Pennsylvania, his agenda includes pushing for energy independence and economic growth, improving social infrastructure, and fixing the health care system. He also plans to fight for free speech and create opportunities for small businesses to grow.
PA voters are still asking the big question, who would make a better representative to the Senate from Pennsylvania, Democrat John Fetterman or Republican Mehmet Oz?
