Vermont State Issue

Who would make a better representative to the #Senate from Vermont, Democrat Peter Welch or Republican Gerald Malloy?

Voters in Vermont are warming up to elect their representative to the U.S. Senate in the elections slated for November 8, 2022. The voters will have a choice of two candidates who were both nominated during the party primaries that were held on August 9, 2022.

The winner of the election will assume the senate seat formerly occupied by Democrat Patrick Leahy, who has represented Vermont since 1975. This election will be crucial since its outcome will impact the U.S. Senate's partisan balance. The Democratic party nominee is Peter Welch while the Republicans have put forward Army Veteran Gerald Malloy.

As evidenced during the first debate organized by VTDigger where the duo faced off, both candidates are offering the electorates a stark choice. According to Malloy, one of the greatest challenges facing the country is record inflation. He is attributing this plague to Congress' trillion-dollar pandemic-era spending packages. To bury this problem, Malloy is proposing that Congress should have some fiscal responsibility.

On the other hand, Welch also acknowledges high inflation as a challenge in the country and pokes holes in the legislation that was recently enacted which provides for negotiation of drug prices as well as spurring the local production of the semiconductor chip. According to him the best strategy to cut the cost of basic needs for expenditures such as housing and childcare is for Congress to establish renewed investments in them.

Gerald Malloy was born in Boston, in 1961. He served in leadership roles for over 22 years. On his campaign website, he expresses his concerns regarding the direction the country is taking and promises to take advantage of his character, experience, performance, and leadership to transform the future into a better one.

Peter Welch, born in Springfield Massachusetts, and has been a US house representative of Vermont since 2007, is described on his people-driven campaign website as someone who has been at the forefront of fighting for an economy that everyone can be proud of, a child-friendly planet, as well as a strong democracy that offers equal rights to participate.

The question for debate; between Democrat Peter Welch and Republican Gerald Malloy, who is best fit to represent Vermonters in the U.S. Senate?
