It’s midterm election year and Nevada is once again in the spotlight. On November 8, 2022, voters in the state will be expected to elect who’ll represent the constituency for the next term in the United States Senate. The coming election fills me with optimism because voters have been making the right call in this category for nearly four decades straight. The people made the right choice in 1987 when they voted in the late Senator Harry Reid and they gave him their backing for three decades straight.
When he decided to not run for reelection in 2017, the people chose the right candidate to succeed him once again, Incumbent Senator Catherine Cortez Masto. Catherine Cortez Masto’s first stint in office has been nothing short of commendable and that’s why I want to see her represent us in the Senate for another term.
Maybe it was because Cortez Masto knew she was stepping into the shoes of a legend or maybe she’s just a very driven individual. Whatever the case, there can be no denying that she delivered for the state and country on a massive level. She happens to be the first Latino to ever be voted into the U.S. Senate and she was everything I hoped she’d be as a representative of the state at the national level.
She brought home the goods for hardworking Nevadan families as hers was the deciding vote that clinched an average of $3,000 in tax cuts. The pandemic period was an especially difficult time but Cortez Masto made it a little less trying by helping deliver $1,400 stimulus checks to over 1.6 million residents of the state. She put the best interests of the state over her party affiliations and supported a bipartisan infrastructure deal that is set to revitalize the employment sector and the economy of Nevada.
Health care has always been a sector that needed massive improvement in the state and the senator did her best to rectify this issue. Cortez Masto is one of the few senators who has consistently voted to defend the Affordable Care Act. To buttress this, she also moved to save health care protections for nearly 500,000 residents of the state with pre-existing conditions. Further down this road, she worked to successfully repeal the humongous 40% tax that many middle-class families had to pay when securing health plans. She also tackled Big Pharma head-on and worked hard to reduce the rising costs of prescription medicine. Cortez Masto has also invested a considerable amount of effort in ensuring that Nevadans have access to behavioral health crisis centers to help them better manage the mental impact of the pandemic.
While still only a first-term senator, Cortez Masto was more proactive than many of her more seasoned colleagues concerning the issue of climate change. Not only was she instrumental in blocking the numerous attempts of former President Donald Trump to irresponsibly dump nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, but she was also critical in preventing the drilling operations scheduled to start in the beautiful Ruby Mountains. She has also been very present for the residents and business owners in Truckee Meadows, providing $181 million to help them cope with the incessant flooding the region’s prone to.
Cortez Masto has also supported several bills that have increased the quality of education and has been at the forefront of every move in the Senate to lower the rate of crime and help support victims. The incumbent senator hasn’t only gone to great lengths to protect the tribal communities in the state but she has also bravely defended reproductive rights too.
As a senator, she is well-grounded, and vocal and has managed to maintain her moral prestige in what has to be a rather challenging position. Cortez Masto is truly complete on every front.
She’s doing a great job representing Nevada, and any well-meaning voter in the state would be more than happy to see her carry on this great undertaking. So let’s come out on decision-making day and make sure that our mandate isn’t replaced with anything inferior.
Let’s vote for Cortez Masto and keep making Nevada a home worth coming back to!
